Grade Calculator FAQs
Frequently asked questions regarding calculating test scores, overall course grades, and percentage rounding.
Q1How do I calculate my current grade?
To calculate your current grade, determine whether your teacher uses total points or weighted categories. For points, divide your earned points by total points possible and multiply by 100. For weighted grades, multiply your average in each category by that category's percentage weight, then sum the results.
Q2How do I calculate a grade from points?
Divide total earned points by total possible points, then multiply by 100. For example, earning 42 out of 50 points is (42 / 50) * 100 = 84%.
Q3Can a single zero lower my grade dramatically?
Yes. A zero has a severe mathematical impact because it provides 0 points to the numerator while adding the full assignment points to the denominator. For example, scoring 0 on a 100-point test when your prior average was 90% across three tests will plummet your grade to 67.5%.
Q4How does dropping the lowest grade affect my average?
Dropping the lowest score eliminates your worst performance outlier, immediately raising your grade average. For example, if you have scores of 60%, 90%, and 95%, your average is 81.6%. Dropping the 60% raises your average to 92.5%.
