Final Grade FAQs
Calculations for final exams, what score is needed to pass, and target grade planning.
Q1How much will my final exam change my grade?
Your final exam will change your course grade proportionally to its syllabus weight. A 20% final exam can shift your grade by up to 20 percentage points in either direction.
Q2What grade do I need on my final exam to pass?
Use the formula: Needed Score = (Passing Grade - (Current Grade * (1 - Exam Weight))) / Exam Weight. For example, if you have a 68%, need a 70% to pass, and the final is worth 25%, you need (70 - (68 * 0.75)) / 0.25 = (70 - 51) / 0.25 = 76.0%.
Q3What if my final exam score needed is negative?
If the needed score calculation results in zero or a negative number, congratulations! You have accumulated enough points throughout the term that you have mathematically secured your target grade even if you score zero on the final.
